2 local authors to discuss eating disorders and the Jewish community

In recognition of National Eating Disorders Awareness Week, two local women who have faced struggles themselves and written about it will present a program about Jewish Women, Food and Body Image on Wednesday evening, Feb. 27 in St. Petersburg

Wendy R. Levine of Seminole and Iris Ruth Pastor of Tampa will discuss such topics as relating your self-worth to the number on the scale, developing healthy ways to self-soothe unrelated to food and exploring at what point dieting morphs into disordered eating.

A recovering anorexic, Levine is the author of “Butterflies Are Free...What About Me: One Woman’s Battle With Anorexia Nervosa.” Pastor, a recovered bulimic, is author of “The Secret Life Of A Weight-Obsessed Woman: Wisdom To Live The Life You Crave.”

According to the National Eating Disorders Association, 20 million women and 10 million men suffer from a clinically significant eating disorder in the United States.

Several recent studies indicate a rise in the problem for Jewish women – not surprising since food is a central part of the Jewish culture.

Open to the public, free of charge, the program is sponsored by the St. Petersburg Chapter of Hadassah. It will begin at 7 p.m. at Congregation B’nai Israel, 300 58th St., N., St. Petersburg.

Following their presentations, attendees will have an opportunity to ask questions of Levine and Pastor. In addition, their books will be available for purchase and signing.
