Sofer Rabbi Yochanan Salazar assists the Mendelsohn family with the mitzvah of writing in the new Torah scroll. (L-R) Mandi, Rachel, Lane and Abigail Mendelsohn with Rabbi Salazer. Members of the community joined Hillel Academy staff, students and families at school on Sunday, Jan. 13, for the Hillel Academy Torah Fair. The fair consisted of multiple educational, interactive and creative stations – all free – staffed by Jewish clergy and volunteers.
The stations included Torah writing, Bible eats (snacks), crafts, calligraphy, creative trope and much more.
Writing a Torah is an unforgettable experience, which, in the process, fulfills the Torah’s 613th mitzvah (commandment).
The Torah was donated to the school by Murray and Sarah Fisch and family, in memory of Murray’s father, Jerry Fisch, and is being written by sofer Rabbi Yochanan Salazar.
