Musician Alan Goodis to spend weekend at Schaarai Zedek


Alan Goodis Alan Goodis Alan Goodis, a national touring Jewish musician, will be the Artist in Residence at Schaarai Zedek on Feb. 22-24.

Born and raised in Toronto and now based in Chicago, Goodis is a product of the URJ camp movement. His music explores the boundaries of prayer and song whether he is leader at Shabbat services, working with students, or playing in a concert. He strives to engage youth, teach students, and provide a new musical interpretation of prayer.

His album, “This Place” was recorded in 2014 in Nashville and includes songs such as Al Sh’losha, Lecha Dodi and You & I (Everything Will Be Alright). His first record, self-titled, launched his career in 2009. In 2015 he and Dan Nichols teamed up to put out “This is the Remix,” a collection of Jewish songs of celebration. He also contributed to a songbook in 2011 titled “Rauch 5771: New Jewish Tunes - Social Action.”

The following is his schedule for the weekend at the temple:

Friday, Feb. 22

• 5:30 p.m., he will lead a tot Shabbat service for families with young children. Older siblings and grandparents welcome. There will be a complimentary Shabbat dinner following. RSVP is required.

• 7:30 p.m. Goodis and the Schaarai Zedek teen band will participate in the regular Shabbat eve service.

Saturday, Feb. 23

• 10:30 a.m. Goodis will take part in the “Come as You Are” Shabbat morning service. RSVP required.

• noon he will present Shira Shabbaton: A Shabbat Workshop for Grades 6–12. (lunch will be provided). RSVP required.

Sunday, Feb. 24

• 9 a.m. Goodis and the Schaarai Zedek teen band will perform at the religious school assemblies.
