Holocaust to be remembered Jan. 20 at Tampa ceremony

As has become a tradition in Tampa, the International Diplomatic Corps of Florida will hold its Seventh Annual International Holocaust Remembrance Day Ceremony on Sunday, Jan. 20 at 3 p.m. at the Italian Club of Tampa, 1731 E. Seventh Ave., Ybor City.

The event will include reflections by Holocaust survivor Rifka Glatz of Sarasota, a candle lighting ceremony, attendance by the Consul General of Israel and musical performances by the Bay Area Cantorial Association.

Mayor Rick Kriseman of St. Petersburg and other dignitaries, will also be on hand for the event.

Those wishing to attend must contact by Jan. 13. Seating begins at 2 p.m. and the ceremony begins promptly at 3 p.m.

The United Nations declared Jan. 27 annually as International Holocaust Remembrance Day, marking the date in 1945 that, Auschwitz-Birkenau, the largest Nazi concentration and death camp, was liberated by the Red Army. In Israel, Holocaust Remembrance Day or Yom HaShoah, was declared to be annually on the 27th of Nissan on the Hebrew calendar, which corresponds to sometime in April or May on the Gregorian calendar.
