The next wave of local lay leaders, the 2016-2017 Jewish Leadership Institute class, graduated on Wednesday, April 19, during opening night ceremonies for the Tampa Bay Jewish Film Festival at the Bryan Glazer Family JCC in Tampa.

Graduates were joined on stage by Alissa Fischel, chief development officer of the Tampa JCCs & Federation, and Emilie Socash, executive director of the Jewish Federation of Pinellas & Pasco Counties. Each graduate was presented with a certificate of achievement for taking the initiative to learn more about the Tampa Bay Jewish community, each Federation’s supported agencies and the work they do locally, nationally and across the globe.

“Since its inception, there have been 11 JLTI classes with 219 graduates, many of whom have gone on to serve on various boards and committees throughout the Tampa Bay area. Past graduates have sat on the boards of the Tampa JCCs & Federation, the Jewish Federation of Pinellas & Pasco Counties, TOP Jewish Foundation, Harry & Jeanette Weinberg Village Assisted Living Residences, among many others,” said Alissa Fischel during the graduation ceremony.

“Our graduates were also able to share in special experiences during this year’s JLTI, including a trip to One Buc Place to learn about both sides of philanthropy – from the perspective of the fundraiser and the philanthropist – as well as attend the annual President’s Dinner and participate in a philanthropic day of giving,” Fischel said.

Guest speakers at JLTI programs volunteered their time to share teachings and thoughts on the subjects of “Jewish Community 101,” leadership, philanthropy, volunteerism, Jewish identity and “Playing Our Part in Tikkun Olam.” Those speakers included Rabbi Richard Birnholz, Bryan Glazer, Gary Gould, Dr. Joshua Green, William Kalish, Mary Key, Rod Margolis, Herb Swarzman and Socash.

“Each graduate will have the opportunity to identify an organization or cause that they find near and dear to their hearts. The Federation’s on each side of the bay will then work with JLTI alums to create a meaningful match so that all interested graduates are placed on a local council, committee or board of directors,” said Socash.

Participant Rachel Dawkins said it was a worthwhile experience on several levels.

“Ultimately JLTI gave me a deeper appreciation for the many community resources available in both Tampa and Pinellas,” she said. “I enjoyed meeting other likeminded young adults from across the Bay Area who I now consider friends.”

The JLTI program is a joint-partnership between the Young Adult Division of the Tampa JCCs & Federation and the Jewish Federation of Pinellas & Pasco Counties. To learn more about the JLTI program or to apply for the 2017-2018 JLTI class, contact Lisa Robbins at lisa.robbins@jewishtampa.com.
