ELAINE WEINER NEWMAN, 95, of Tampa, died Feb. 5. Born in Toledo, OH, she later moved to Cleveland. In 1954, she and her late husband, Stanford, moved to Tampa with the family business, JC Newman Cigar Company. After raising her sons, she took a position as the director of community relations with Maas Brothers and actively participated in many Tampa community organizations. She was a member of Congregation Schaarai Zedek, the Lamplighters, the Chiseler’s, and helped found the Downtown Library of Tampa. She volunteered for more than 20 years at Tampa General Hospital and served as president of the Palma Ceia Ladies Golf Association. She was also a board member of the Tampa Museum of Art, the H. B. Plant Museum, the Tampa Philharmonic, and Friends of the Library, along with being past president of the Ladies of Berkeley and a founder of the Berkeley Blazers. Survivors include her sons and daughters-in-law, Eric and Lyris Newman, and Bobby and Merideth Newman; and three grandchildren. The family suggests memorials to the Elaine W. Newman Scholarship Fund at Berkeley Preparatory School. (Segal Funeral Home, Beth David Chapel)
