Essay contest on Israel’s positive impact on world offers scholarships, flight to Israel

Hillels of the Florida Suncoast is inviting college students to participate in the Rutstein Judaic Essay Contest, which offers scholarships for the winning entries on the topic of how Israel has positively impacted the world.

This is the second year of the essay contest for students on campuses where Suncoast Hillels has a presence. While last year the contest was only open to Jewish students, eligibility has been expanded this year to allow any student to compete. The aim of the program is to help entrants creatively connect with their Jewish identity and in the case of non-Jewish students, learn more about Jewish and Israeli culture and heritage.

This year’s essay theme is how Israel has positively impacted the world.

The first place winner will receive free round-trip airfare to Israel plus a monetary award. In total, the four top entrees will receive $1,540 in scholarships.

“We are thrilled to be able to continue to offer Suncoast Hillels’ students the opportunity to more deeply explore Israel’s positive contributions to the world through creative writing,” said Stan Rutstein, who along with his wife, Jo, sponsor the contest. The Rusteins are long-time members of the Sarasota Jewish community.

“Hillel is doing great work to engage young Jewish adults across the Suncoast, and this is another way that we can not only help several of these students, but also help Hillel achieve their mission of reaching and engaging as many Jewish college students as possible on a variety of different levels,” said Jo Rustein.

Full contest rules and a registration form are available at Suncoast Hillels’ website, www.suncoasthillels.org, or by emailing shalom@suncoasthillels.org to request a copy.

All entries must be received no later than midnight on Friday, March 11.
