Tampa JCC & Federation honor 20 Women of Distinction

Nearly 350 people gathered at Congregation Schaarai Zedek on Thursday, Dec. 3 as the Tampa JCC & Federation Women’s Philanthropy honored 20 outstanding community members at the annual Bobbe Karpay Women of Distinction program.

The event recognizes local women who exemplify Jewish values and commitment to their organizations and the Jewish community. The annual event is named for Bobbe Karpay, of blessed memory, a committed Tampa Jewish community volunteer who devoted her time and talent to many Tampa area organizations during her 50 years in Tampa. She embodied the ideals of a “woman of distinction.”

Female spiritual leaders of the community participated throughout the program and the keynote address was given by Julie Shifman, an inspirational speaker, author, and business owner whose presentation focused on five “happiness catchers” – things people can do on a daily basis to create happiness in their lives and have a more positive attitude.

Program chairs Stacy Leeds and Karen Levy said, “Watching the Tampa Jewish community join together to honor these special women was heartwarming. We appreciate all the support from the nominating organizations and the individuals in attendance. We look forward to continuing to add exemplary women to our respected list - now over 200 strong - for many years to come.”

The following women, with the organizations they represent, were honored: Marcy Solomon Baker, Congregation Rodeph Sholom; Michelle Chamo, Young Israel of Tampa; Jill Hekkanen, Brandeis National Committee; Shirley Kanas, Tampa Ameet Chapter of Hadassah; Kathryn Kislak, Tampa Jewish Community Center; Rochelle Lafer, Beth Israel Jewish Congregation of Sun City Center; Marilyn Lehman, Congregation Beth Am; Carol Lieber, TampaBay Job-Links; Aleksandra Meek, Congregation Kol Ami; Lynne Merriam, TOP Jewish Foundation; Bonnie Amsterdam Miele, Hillel Academy of Tampa; Jessica Older, Weinberg Village Assisted Living Residences; Melinda Sheer, Congregation Schaarai Zedek; Maxine Solomon, Jewish National Fund; Jan Stern, Tampa Jewish Family Services; Debbie Taub, Florida Holocaust Museum; Lisa Teblum, State of Israel Bonds; Amy Weinstein, Congregation Beth Shalom; Rande Weissman, Tampa Jewish Federation, and Ally Willen, z”l, Hillels of the Florida Suncoast.
