Opera Tampa of the Straz Center for Performing Arts performed for Hillel Academy’s third through eighth grade classes recently, explaining and demonstrating the various roles voices play in an opera.

Four singers accompanied by a pianist taught the students about the numerous components that make up an opera including the singers, story, plot, setting, music, gestures, actions, orchestra, set and costumes.

Among the many facets of opera the students learned about was that operas are written in many languages including English, Spanish, French, Russian, German and Czech. Each of the singers told the students, which language was the most challenging for them to learn and perform.

After a finale from the Barber of Seville, the Hillel Academy students taught Opera Tampa members how they say thank you in Hebrew – Todah Rabah.
