2 Iranians convicted in Thailand of bomb plot against Israelis

(JTA) — Two Iranians were convicted in a Thailand court for plotting a bomb attack on Israeli diplomats in Bangkok.

Saeid Moradi, 39, was sentenced Aug. 22 to life in prison, and Mohammad Kharzei, 43, was given a 15-year term.

The men were arrested in February 2012 after the home in which they were staying in a residential neighborhood of Bangkok exploded, injuring five people. The house, which Moradi and Kharzei shared with two non-Thais, was located several blocks from the Israeli Embassy in the Thai capital.

Moradi lost both his legs in the blast from a hand grenade that he threw at police as they pursued him following the home explosion. He did not throw the bomb far enough and was caught in the blast, which tore off his legs.

The explosions came a day after Israeli diplomats were targeted by bombs in New Delhi and Tbilisi, Georgia; the India blast injured the wife of an Israeli diplomat. Israel blamed the attacks on Iran.
