B’nai B’rith

Show time: Join Greater Tampa Bay B’nai B’rith for a performance of Murder Among Friends on Sunday, March l0 at 4 p.m. The show is B’nai B’rith’s annual fundraiser and will he held at Ed Fletcher’s Early Bird Dinner Theatre, 200 S. McMullen Booth Road, Clearwater. The cost is $45 per person. For reservations, call Arlene Berger at (727) 726-9579 no later than March 1.


Purim party: Are You Smarter Than a 5th Grader? About Purim that is. If you are curious about what this is, join Ravak-Schaarai Zedek Singles on Wednesday, Feb. 20 from 7-9 p.m. at Congregation Schaarai Zedek to find out. Participants can wear a costume if they want. Wine and cheese will be served. For more information and to RSVP, email by Feb. 18. A donation of canned goods would be appreciated for the Tampa Jewish Family Services food bank. The only requirements to attend Ravak events are that participants are single and Jewish. The temple is at 3303 W. Swann Ave. in Tampa.

Purim play: Congregation Beth Shalom of Brandon’s 50+ Jewish Singles group invites singles to attend a special Purim version of Grease, the Musical on Saturday, Feb. 23 at 7 p.m. This annual Purim event stars temple members. Hamantaschen will be served following the play. Bring cartons of pasta to be donated to local food pantries and shake them when Haman is mentioned. Mah jongg tourney: The Chai Chapter of Hadassah invites all mah jongg players to a day of tournament play on Thursday, Feb. 28 at Freedom Plaza, 1010 American Eagle Blvd., Sun City Center. Doors open at 8:45 a.m. and play begins at 10 a.m. The $36 registration fee includes breakfast, lunch, a snack and door prizes. There will be cash prizes for winners, with $100 as the top prize. Jet Setters: The Jet Setters North is a group of Jewish Tampa seniors that meets for a program, followed by lunch and socializing time, games to play, and a Yiddish speaking group. On Thursday, Feb. 28 from 1-3 p.m., a representative from the Tampa Bay History Center will present a program on the history of this area. Seniors are asked to register in advance. All meetings are free.

New discussion group: Pat Renfroe will lead a new discussion group that focuses on current events on the second and fourth Tuesdays of each month from 10:30 to noon in the senior lounge.

Mah jongg games: Mah jongg is played on Fridays from 1-4 p.m. It is free and open to the public. Also, on Tuesdays, mah jongg lessons will be offered from 2-3:30 p.m. Cost is $10 for members and $12 for non-members.

Art and lunch: An art appreciation virtual lecture and lunch is held on the first and third Thursday each month. A segment of the Great Courses lecture series and a lunch are on the monthly menu. Each meeting is $3 for JCC members, $5 for non-members.

Canasta lessons: Sign up now for a seven-week session that runs every Wednesday from through March 20. Beginner’s lessons are from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. and intermediate lessons are from 1-3 p.m. Lynnda Jacob is the teacher. Cost is $15 for members, $20 for non-members for the whole season.

Game play: Every Monday and Friday from 1-4 p.m., the senior lounge at the JCC is open for game playing and mingling.

Watercolor classes: In partnership with the USF OSHER programs, watercolor classes are offered for artists of all levels. Classes began on Monday, Jan. 28, and are held on Mondays through March 25. A beginning/ intermediate class runs from 12:30-2:30 p.m. An intermediate/advanced class meets from 10 a.m. to noon. The cost is $60 for JCC members and $90 for non-members, plus supplies. Registration is required.

Support groups

Alzheimer’s caregivers: Menorah Manor’s Bresler Alzheimer’s and Related Disorders Program offers a complimentary support group open to anyone in the community. This group meets in the Samson Nursing Center at Menorah Manor, 255 59th St. N., St. Petersburg, on the first Thursday of the month from 3:30-5 p.m. For more information, call Gwen Kaldenberg, MSW, director of the Bresler Program, at (727) 302-3750.
